Registration Timeline
A temporary registration timeline is expected to run until November 2027. The goal during this period is to demonstrate responsible use and effectiveness so that the product can become a long-term tool within the integrated pest management (IPM) model.
Training and Eligibility Requirements
Product Stewardship Training is required to purchase strychnine and will be available through the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) until September 1, 2026.
Strychnine cannot be sold or used in urban areas and may not be used on acreages.
Additionally, purchasers will need to complete:
- 2026 Purchase Information, Treatment Plan, and Strychnine Use Declaration
- 2026 Product Evaluation Form
Who Can Purchase
Producers can purchase Strychnine from their home municipality.
- Landowner (e.g. Farm Fuel #, Land Titles, GST #, Ag insurance)
- Renter or lessee with written agreement
- Director under corporate farm, Hutterite colony, or a numbered company
Supply and Distribution
There is currently no supply in Canada.
Geographic Availability
Forty-nine Alberta municipalities and 15 crop districts within Saskatchewan are within the Strychnine Focus Areas.
Application Windows
Spring applications can occur from (March 1 – June 15) before vegetation has emerged and in late summer (July 15 to September 1) after vegetation has died down and during the juvenile window. Spring is the best time to apply Strychnine.
Purchase Limits
The province has set a maximum purchase limit of two cases (24 bottles of 250ml) at one time. Flagstaff County will limit each producer to 1 case until more supplies are secured.
Rate
1 bottle of 2% Liquid Strychnine will treat approximately 1 acre under average conditions.
Price
Flagstaff will sell strychnine to eligible users at cost-recovery of approximately $20/bottle.
Reporting
Applicators will need to complete the Product Evaluation Form post application.
Empty Containers
All empty containers must be returned empty and triple rinsed to the Flagstaff County Administration Building.

Producers can register for the Strychnine emailing list to receive updates and important information regarding the emergency use program. Alternatively, producers can monitor Flagstaff Counties and the provincial websites. - Complete required training and meet eligibility requirements.
